Videos for Domus Academy Installation for the Salone del Mobile 2001
Domus Academy Research Center, 2001
Domus Academy's installation for the Salone del Mobile 2001 in Milan explored the invisible electromagnetic landscape that surrounds us — the constant flux of data from mobile phones, TV broadcasts, satellite communications, and wireless networks that we move through without seeing.
I designed and produced the videos for the installation, creating visual representations of these invisible data streams to make the abstract tangible for gallery visitors.
The installation made invisible data visible
The physical installation created an immersive environment where the projected videos surrounded visitors with visualisations of electromagnetic data flows. The space was designed so that visitors felt physically present within the data landscape they normally passed through unaware.
The installation context — Salone del Mobile, Milan's premier design event — meant the work needed to communicate immediately to a design-literate audience without explanatory text.
The videos evoked data streams through abstract motion
The video content used abstract visual language — flowing particles, interference patterns, signal waves — to evoke the sensation of data moving through space. The aesthetic was deliberately non-literal: the goal was to create a feeling of immersion in electromagnetic flux, not to illustrate specific technologies.
Each video sequence represented a different type of invisible data — cellular signals, broadcast waves, satellite communications — using distinct visual rhythms and densities to differentiate them without labelling.
